Rare 7 foot Atlantic Stugeon wash's up on shoreline in the Nutmeg State

Connecticut biologists are in the process of trying to find out why a seven foot protected species Atlantic Sturgeon died and washed up on shore on the 26th of April, 2014 .The large prehistoric looking fish was quite a sight for people walking the shoreline.
The State from 1988-1994 employes from the Deep Division staff collected, tagged and released 325 Short-Nosed Sturgeon. Data from recaptured fish were used to estimate the total population of adult short nosed sturgeon at approximately 850 of the fish in the lower Connecticut River.( between the Holyoke Dam in Massachusetts and the river mouth) The fish were tagged and some implanted with surgical ultrasound transmitters so that their individual movements could be tracked over a 1-2 year period.
The fish are known to be a very hardy and long lived (50-75 years) and have a delayed maturity rate. The species do not spawn till age 15 to 25 years. Non -annual making them extremely vulnerable to a population decline and a possible extinction.
This one that washed up is a much larger cousin called the Atlantic Sturgeon and was made famous on their highly sought after caviar. The fish was near the Elys Ferry Road at the Lyme/Old Lyme mouth of the Connecticut River. It has been determined that the large fish was a female with immature eggs. The biologists are still working to age the fish. Both species of the sturgeon are endangered and it is illegal to disturb them.  Wayne

"Bass Tournaments" for 2014 in New England Game On !

The Ice Out is almost complete in the North East and the competitors are itching to wet a line or practice a new lure, jig or a style to fish the "Pre-Spawn Bass Season". In my back yard and former bass club, the Burrillville Bass Club (BBC) opened their season on April 18, 2014 at Pascoag Reservoir or Echo Lake in Glocester, R.I. where the boat launch area is located and last years champion set the frost bite opener in motion and let every one know that they are still the team to beat. Yes Dave Royer weighed in a limit of 5 Largemouth at 9lbs 9 oz for first place and Master Brian (Spoony) Parenteau followed in a close second. Small non-lead jigs, soft jerk baits and a Rapala Blue/Chrome twitching technique landed the sluggish fish. Water Temp was 51-53 and if you found a small section about 4-5 degrees warmer, you found the lethargic fish.
Over at Mashpaug Pond in Massachusetts, the local bass club e-mailed me the results and a lot better fishing across the state line. 18lbs 5oz. took first place, second place 16lbs. 9oz and third 15lbs 3 oz on a warm afternoon in a very hot cove. Temperature is the whole key to spring pre-spawn bass fishing.
The Burrillville Bass Club (BBC) will now fish 27 consecutive weeks on the Thursday night schedule, rain, snow or shine.  The Bass Club started in small prams and canoes about 1973 and is what you would classify a working persons fraternity. Friendships made last a lifetime and the club the last few years even has a year end Banquet. 7 local ponds and lakes in Northern Rhode Island on a rotating schedule and 100% catch and release and heavy penalties for not adhering to it.
The last count was about 34 organized bass clubs in the area and stable. Some are closed memberships because of the size of our boat ramps and parking area's. Some are National recognized for points and some are Open Tournaments. Some even have a waiting list or a fill in list to see if you really have what it takes at this level. Remember, 99% percent of this club type of fishing is 'NO Live Bait".Most are two man teams and 5 fish. Some are single or pairs and 10 fish, the Rhode Island limit is 5 bass, Largemouth or Smallmouth creel limit.
My E-MAIL waynewnri@yahoo.com has just started to get a few of the schedules and are in no way the only events that have the required State permits to hold one over three vessels, no fee in Rhode Island from Al Libbe at the Great Swamp Headquarters. Mass. and Conn. have their own set of abstracts so check before you take for granted you're date is not already spoken for.

Hats off to all the New England DEM'S for monitoring a Great American Story of saving a lost species !

A April 19 through April to April 26 for licensed Junior Hunters ,(ages 12-15) while accompanied
by a licensed adult Mentor. The Mentor may not carry a firearm at this time.
It is the 34th consecutive year for a wild turkey hunt in Connecticut. The population is approximately 35,000 birds. During the 2013 Turkey season 9,017 hunters, Female and Male bought permits and a valid hunting license and 1,248 took a bird and then reported it.

Common sense and patience are required for maintaining a safe hunting experience and harvesting a Gobbler. Spring Turkey hunting requires preparation. Scouting, Calling and Hunting techniques unique to this effort can be learned by attending Seminars, Reading Articles, Watching Videos and talking with other experienced Turkey Hunters.  Wayne

The stunning story of the Eldia shipwreck

I guess I picked a good distant Mentor, in Bill Quinn from Cape Cod. I only knew of some of his works, books, photos. When I got message yesterday of his passing, I opened a Man's life work in print and realized just how much one person can accomplish on you're short time on this earth.
He had to inspire others and we will all be better off because of it. Certain things should be preserved for future generations and a record of our New England Coasts beauty and his casualties as well.
