When Patrolman Tim Gallison heard splashing in the water off the State Pier at around midnight on a recent Sunday, his immediate reaction was that someone had fallen into Bristol Harbor, Rhode Island
As Gallison, an avid recreational fishermen, walked closer to the water, he recognized it as a blue fin tuna. It looked about 4 feet long and a hundred pounds. Gallison also used the camera on his cellphone to video the tuna and then sent the video to the University of Rhode Island to see if one of the marine biologist there could confirm the species of fish. Terry Murray, a professor of fisheries and aquaculture, said he watched the video with a few of his colleagues and they were confident that it was in fact a Bluefin tuna who had corralled some herring in the harbor.
Gallison has fished the Canyons along the edge of the continental shelf and other areas far offshore, but he had never heard of a giant tuna this far north in Bristol Harbor. Source Pro-Jo Alex Kuffner and You-Tube Share.
