Archery Shooters Association (ASA) confirms that the ASA Hoyt Archery Alabama Pro/Am held at Graham Creek Nature Preserve in Foley Alabama on Feb. 25-28, has drawn the single largest competitor field in the organization's tournament history with the official number of registered shooters at 1,925.
"This is truly amazing," says ASA President, Mike Tyrell. "We are very proud and humbled by the attendance at the ASA Hoyt Archery Alabama Pro/Am, particularly considering Foley, Alabama was a new location. The increase in attendance is proof that the sport of 3-D archery is growing thanks to the efforts of our staff and youth programs such as S3DA."
"We brought the ASA here, to Graham Creek," said Don Staley, Executive
Director of Foley Sports Tourism. "But Leslie Gahagan and her staff made
this happen. The entire City of Foley made this happen. All departments
played a role and our volunteers all week were fabulous. Along with our city
partners, staff and volunteers, we thank ASA, Hoyt Archery, McKenzie
Targets and all our wonderful tournament sponsors and vendors. We are
very pleased with the success of this first time event and we'd love to have ASA folks back."
For the next five years, the Foley tour stop will be part of the national ASA series of tournaments known as the McKenzie Pro/Am Tour. Along with the tour stops in Foley, the ASA McKenzie Pro/Am series visits London, Kentucky, Paris, Texas, Augusta, Georgia, Metropolis, Illinois and Fort Benning, Georgia through the summer months.
The economic impact of this record setting Pro/Am archery tournament is an estimated $2.5 million kick to the local economy. Restaurants and lodging establishments around the area were pushed to capacity from the nearly 2,000 visiting archers, along with their families, event vendors and sponsors. Competitors arrived from across the south and Midwest, and as far away as
California, New York, Massachusetts and even Great Britain.
"We enjoyed record sales of rubber boots," said Jenelle Moyer,
Manager of the Mossy Oak store nearby in Foley. "Some mud remained down those wooded shooting lanes from heavy rains earlier in the week, so we extended an extra discount for all
tournament competitors. The shooters did indeed spread the word, and boot sales got a fast kick in the butt."
Since its inception in 1993, the Archery Shooters Association, headquartered in Kennesaw, Georgia, has hosted tens of thousands of amateur and professional archers from across the United States in national and state 3-D competitions. The state level organization is known as the ASA Federation, while the national level is the McKenzie ASA Pro/Am Tour. The Federation has chapters in 30 states with over 7,000 members and 300 clubs. Features that distinguish ASA competitions include standardized competition rules; professionally executed shooting ranges; high standards for dress and conduct; safety standards that include a maximum arrow speed standard; the copyrighted 12-ring and 14-ring scoring system; and the largest paybacks in national competitive 3-D archery .
